The family of Natalie McDonald and her seven-year-old niece, Valentina Foster, are mourning their loss after both died in a house fire in Grangetown, near Middlesbrough, during the early hours of Wednesday. Lisa Kirton, the mother of Natalie, described her daughter as “a beautiful soul, who would have done anything for anybody.” She remembered Natalie as “lovely, bright and bubbly,” adding that “everybody loved her.”
Valentina, affectionately known as Tina, had been staying with the family for the summer holidays. Reflecting on the tragedy, Kirton described her granddaughter as a “cute little kid” and expressed deep sorrow over the loss. During the incident, Natalie’s 15-year-old daughter and a friend managed to escape the burning property by climbing through an upstairs window. Kirton noted that the friend had “kicked out a window” and ultimately “saved their lives.”
Cleveland Police have launched an investigation into the blaze, confirming that two men, aged 23 and 31, have been arrested on suspicion of murder and remain in custody. The fire also left a 48-year-old woman in critical condition at a hospital, while three others sustained injuries that are not considered life-threatening.
Authorities are currently working to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the event. Supt Emily Harrison, the Redcar and Cleveland Local Policing Commander, stated that the force is “keeping an open mind and cannot rule out any links to wider organised crime at this time.”
To support the local community, police have increased patrols in the Grangetown area to provide reassurance. Supt Harrison encouraged anyone with information or concerns to approach officers directly. The incident occurred approximately two miles from the site of a separate A66 crash that resulted in the deaths of five young men and two police officers on Saturday morning.
