The Kennedy Center Board of Trustees voted on Tuesday to shutter the institution for renovations, a decision that followed an exceptionally volatile meeting. During the session, President Donald Trump dialed in to express his frustration, reportedly berating Democratic Representative Joyce Beatty, who serves as an ex-officio member of the board. Sources described the call as chaotic, with one observer remarking, “It was f**king crazy.”
The tension stemmed from an ongoing legal dispute regarding attempts to rebrand portions of the facility. During the exchange, the President allegedly screamed at Beatty, holding her responsible for involving the courts and suggesting her actions were causing the performing arts center’s downfall. In response, Beatty reportedly countered by asserting that the President’s involvement had left the institution burdened with significant debt.
This confrontation occurred shortly after US District Judge Casey Cooper issued a ruling effectively halting the board’s efforts to attach the President’s name to the John F. Kennedy memorial. The judge characterized the proposal to rename the campus and add an inscription thanking the President for restoration efforts as a move that “bucks a federal court order and a statute Congress enacted.” Cooper further noted that defendants cannot install such memorials without explicit approval from Congress.
The board now faces a hurdle in its plan to close the facility: it must secure a reversal of a previous court order that mandates the center remain open while Beatty’s lawsuit proceeds. The Justice Department is anticipated to file an appeal regarding this matter by Friday. Meanwhile, the President suggested on Truth Social that if his name is not ultimately displayed on the building, the planned reconstruction will not move forward, adding that the building would be “destined to doom” if the courts block the name change.
Despite the current impasse, the President noted that $17 million in funds he raised has been deposited into the center’s account to assist with operations. The board had previously adopted a resolution on August 13 proposing to affix the text “Restored and Renovated by President Donald J. Trump” to the facade. Although they initially intended to install the inscription this month, legal counsel informed Judge Cooper they would delay until October 8 to allow for judicial review.
The President also directed criticism toward Judge Cooper, who was appointed by Barack Obama, labeling him a “very hostile and conflicted Judge.” Regarding a secondary proposal to honor “The Trump Kennedy Center Fund” once $100 million is raised, Cooper deemed the issue premature as no funds have been collected yet. He ordered that the court be notified if the threshold is met, requiring at least 60 days of notice before any such text could be installed.
