President Donald Trump has shared a misleading video on his Truth Social platform that appears to show King Charles shrugging and walking away from a man who collapsed during a royal engagement. The edited footage, posted during the US Labor Day holiday, is part of a three-minute montage intended to contrast the President’s public conduct with that of other world leaders.
The specific clip of the King was captured in July 2020 when, as the Prince of Wales, he visited an Asda supermarket distribution centre in Bristol during the Covid-19 pandemic. While the video shared by Trump suggests indifference, the original footage shows the King reaching out to the man as he fell and remaining nearby while the worker received medical assistance. Photographs from later in that same visit confirm that the King spoke with the individual after he had recovered.
The montage also features other world leaders in scenarios presented as disrespectful, including French President Emmanuel Macron standing near a guardsman who collapsed at the Elysee Palace. Additionally, the video includes clips of former President Joe Biden appearing to check his watch during a military repatriation ceremony and former President Barack Obama stepping off Marine One while holding a paper cup during a salute to US Marines.
In contrast, the latter half of the video portrays President Trump in a more favorable light, showing him picking up a Marine’s cap, saluting at a repatriation ceremony, and comforting the families of fallen soldiers. The video is set to the song “A Thousand Years” by Christina Perri and features on-screen captions such as “the side of Trump the media doesn’t show you” and “the people’s president.”
Buckingham Palace declined to comment on the matter, and the White House has not responded to requests for a statement. Despite the misleading nature of the shared clip, President Trump has frequently highlighted his positive relationship with the British monarch, famously describing him as “the greatest king in my book” following the King and Queen’s state visit to the US this past April.
