Rail operator CrossCountry has been forced to cancel nearly all of its services across the UK following a significant power failure at its Birmingham control centre on Saturday. The outage has rendered many of the systems essential for managing the railway network unavailable, leading to widespread disruption that is expected to continue until further notice.

Reese Proctor, a 22-year-old passenger, described the situation as “frustrating and unacceptable” after he was forced to drive over 100 miles to reach a football match in Manchester. He noted that without the ability to drive, he would have missed the event entirely.
Football fans traveling to fixtures in Liverpool, Newcastle, and Manchester have been warned that remaining services may be extremely busy, and they may be required to stand for part or all of their journeys. CrossCountry, which was ranked as Britain’s worst rail operator in June, has apologized for the inconvenience and is working with partners to mitigate the impact.
To assist stranded travelers, the company has confirmed that tickets originally valid for Sunday will be accepted for travel until Wednesday. Several other operators, including London North Eastern Railway and Chiltern Railways, have agreed to accept CrossCountry tickets on reasonable alternative routes. Additionally, National Rail has authorized the use of London Underground services and West Midlands Metro services between Birmingham New Street and Wolverhampton at no extra cost.
