Professor Jason Arday was discovered dead in Battersea, south London, on Friday. Authorities have described the death as unexpected and have confirmed it is not being treated as suspicious.
Arday made headlines in 2023 when he was appointed as a professor of sociology of education at the University of Cambridge. At the time of his appointment, he was the university’s youngest black professor, a milestone that was publicly celebrated by the institution.
His career gained significant global attention following the Black Lives Matter movement and ongoing academic debates regarding the de-colonisation of curricula. His passing highlights the ongoing challenges within higher education, where barely one percent of professors at UK universities are black, leaving him part of a small and highly visible minority in the field.
