East Palestine Mayor Trent Conaway, who balances his municipal duties with a full-time role as a logistics coordinator, noted the rarity of such high-profile incidents in the village of approximately 5,000 residents. “We haven’t had this much excitement around here since the train derailed,” Conaway said, referencing the 2023 environmental disaster that brought significant national attention to the northeast Ohio community. “It’s been a little chaotic the last couple of hours, but yeah.”
The arrest occurred during a coordinated effort involving the Mahoning Valley Human Trafficking Task Force. This multi-agency unit, which includes the East Palestine Police Department and is led by the Mahoning County Sheriff’s Office, has been conducting these operations for roughly a decade. Detective Daniel A. Haueter has been a central figure in these local enforcement efforts, earning praise from the mayor for his work in removing individuals from the streets.
Statewide, the initiative has been aggressive. Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost reported in May that more than 1,000 arrests have been made across the state since 2019 as part of human trafficking enforcement operations. Conaway emphasized that these stings are designed to address a broader, growing national problem, regardless of the social or professional status of those caught in the net.
“It just so happens,” Conaway said regarding the arrest of the NFL owner, “we got Mr. York.” The mayor maintained that the enforcement strategy remains consistent for everyone involved. “It doesn’t matter whether they’re a NFL owner or a handyman down the street,” he added. “We’re trying to curb this. It’s part of a broader scope of the human trafficking enforcement. Human trafficking is a real problem. It’s an ever-growing problem in the United States. We’re just trying to do our best to curb that.”
While the primary focus of these operations is to apprehend those seeking to pay for sex, authorities also provide resources to those arrested for sex work. Conaway explained that individuals taken into custody are frequently directed toward state and county-level support services upon their release. The mayor, who previously spoke at the 2024 Republican National Convention, reiterated his support for the task force’s ongoing mission to improve public safety in the region.
