The survey, conducted online between August 20 and September 1, highlights a nearly 10 percentage point decrease in the number of Republicans who “strongly approve” of the president’s job performance. Earlier data from March and April showed that 52% of Republicans strongly approved of his performance, while 31% expressed a more moderate “somewhat approve” sentiment. Current findings show that strong approval has dropped to 41%, while those who somewhat approve have risen to 39%.
Despite these numbers and historical trends suggesting that the party in power typically loses seats in both the House and Senate, the president remains confident regarding his party’s prospects. During an August 30 appearance on Fox News’ “Sunday Night In America With Trey Gowdy,” Trump remarked that he believes his party will perform well, noting that voters often move in the opposite direction of historical precedent for reasons he cannot fully explain.
In an effort to mobilize the base, the president and Vice President JD Vance are scheduled to address the first GOP midterm convention in recent history next week. The event in Dallas is intended to energize supporters before the party shifts its focus to defending seats in critical swing states. The NBC News poll, which surveyed 7,105 adults, carries a margin of error of plus or minus 3.3 percentage points.
