During an interview with radio host Glenn Beck on August 26, the president addressed recent reports suggesting that the 56-year-old leader may have passed away due to injuries sustained during the initial U.S. and Israeli military strikes against Iran.
“I don’t think he’s dead,” Trump stated during the broadcast. While acknowledging that the leader was “very seriously wounded”—specifically noting injuries to his arm and leg—the president maintained that he remains alive. Trump further cast doubt on the rumors by highlighting that Iranian negotiators frequently claim to be seeking final approval from Khamenei on various matters, remarking that if he were deceased, “they’re putting on a pretty good show.”
The rumors gained traction following a report that Tehran is currently “abuzz” with discussions regarding the leader’s fate. The speculation is fueled by his prolonged absence from public view; notably, he was absent from his father’s recent wake, and there have been no verified photos, videos, or audio recordings of him released since his appointment. Mojtaba Khamenei was selected by the Assembly of Experts on March 8 to succeed his father, former Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was killed alongside much of Iran’s senior leadership during the opening phase of the conflict.
Beyond the uncertainty surrounding the leadership, Trump expressed significant frustration with Iranian negotiators, describing them as a group that lacks honor. Tensions between the two nations remain high following the collapse of a June peace deal concerning the Strait of Hormuz. In response to the ongoing instability, the administration has shifted its focus toward increasing economic pressure on Tehran, with Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent recently announcing a new plan for additional sanctions.
