Prime Minister Andy Burnham has stated his intent to reduce the national welfare bill as soon as possible, though he stopped short of guaranteeing any cuts before the next general election. When questioned by reporters on his timeline, Burnham insisted that his administration is working flat out to decrease spending as quickly as possible.
These comments follow the latest Budget, which drew opposition criticism for its lack of specific welfare reform details. Projections indicate welfare costs will climb from £353bn this year to £431bn by the 2031/32 period. While aiming for reductions, Burnham warned against implementing crude cuts and emphasized a goal of moving people into sustainable employment. Meanwhile, the Conservative party has accused the government of being addicted to welfare spending. After welfare spending was forecast to increase from £353bn this year to £431bn in 2031/32, opponents raised concerns over the lack of details on welfare reform in Wednesday’s Budget.
