In a move that has sent ripples through the Michigan political landscape, US Representative Haley Stevens has publicly endorsed Republican Senate candidate Mike Rogers. The announcement came on Sunday, just 48 hours before an election that will prove critical in determining the legislative control of Capitol Hill.
Stevens, who lost a close primary race to Democratic nominee Abdul El-Sayed this past August, made the announcement via a video on X. She stated, “I am endorsing Mike Rogers for the US Senate. Today, I do not belong to Abdul’s campaign.” The congresswoman’s decision followed her exclusion from a joint event with the Democratic candidate, an act that signaled deep-seated friction between the two.
The Representative joined Rogers at a Detroit church service, where she leveled criticism at her own party’s nominee. “Who we are as Michiganders is not hate, and that is not what we are getting out of our Democratic nominee right now,” she asserted. The endorsement arrives as a significant complication for El-Sayed, who is currently facing off against the candidate backed by former President Donald Trump.
