Sources familiar with the situation confirmed that a member of the Air Force flight crew accidentally triggered the safety mechanism. As the slide inflated and reached the ground, ground crews were forced to intervene to deflate and remove the equipment. The older version of Air Force One was subsequently brought in as a backup to ensure the president could continue his travel.
Addressing the situation, Mr. Trump approached reporters on the tarmac to downplay concerns regarding the aircraft’s safety. “So they’re checking the slide over here,” he remarked. “They were doing a check on the slide, you know?” When asked if the malfunction indicated a broader security issue, the president insisted that the equipment was functioning as intended, adding, “No, they were checking it before. And they just wanted to make sure. So they’ve, I guess they’ve already put it up. They want to make sure everything works perfectly.”
The new aircraft, a luxury jet gifted by Qatar, has experienced intermittent service since its unveiling earlier this summer.
