Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian leader Vladimir Putin met on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, to affirm their strategic partnership. The two-day summit commemorates the 25th anniversary of the regional security and economic bloc. While the organization represents approximately 40 percent of the global population and 25 percent of the world’s GDP, it remains a diverse group with internal disagreements. The alliance currently includes 10 member states, 15 “dialogue partners”—including Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Qatar—and two observer nations, Afghanistan and Mongolia.
The gathering brings together numerous heads of state, including India’s Narendra Modi, Pakistan’s Shehbaz Sharif, and Iran’s Masoud Pezeshkian. The summit also serves as a platform for regional leaders to address the ongoing conflict between the United States and Iran. Following a recent exchange of fire between the two nations, President Pezeshkian emphasized that continuing the war is not in the interest of Tehran or the broader region.
Russia’s economy has grown increasingly reliant on China due to Western sanctions imposed following the invasion of Ukraine. This dependency has led to international calls for Beijing to exert pressure on Moscow to cease its military operations. Meanwhile, the United States has expressed concerns regarding military cooperation between Russia and Iran, with President Donald Trump warning both Moscow and Beijing against arming Tehran. Speculation suggests that CIA Director Ratcliffe’s recent visit may have included a warning to Russian officials regarding the supply of weapons to Iran.
As the summit continues, leaders including Putin, Xi, Pezeshkian, Modi, and Sharif are scheduled to participate in a plenary session hosted by Kyrgyzstan President Sadyr Japarov. The event highlights the continued efforts of Russia and China to promote a multipolar world order and present a unified stance against Western influence.
