The Natural History Museum in London has announced the 100 images shortlisted for the 2026 Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition. These finalists were selected from a massive pool of more than 65,000 entries submitted by photographers across 121 countries and territories.
The collection features a diverse array of natural scenes, including a polar bear peering into an ice hole, a black vulture perched on a yacaré caiman carcass, an oxpecker grooming a rhino, and an African bullfrog hunting a butterfly. Jury chair Kathy Moran noted the exceptional quality of the submissions, stating, “Every year I think the entries to our competition can’t get any stronger… and every year I am proven wrong.”
Museum director Doug Gurr described the collection as “truly extraordinary images.” He emphasized the importance of the exhibition, noting that at a time when nature faces unprecedented pressure, these photographs serve as a reminder of what is at stake and what remains worth protecting. Gurr added that visitors will likely leave with a renewed sense of wonder for the planet.
The competition will culminate on October 13, when the overall and category winners are officially announced. Following the announcement, an exhibition showcasing these works will open at the Natural History Museum on October 16 and remain on display through July 11.
