Reform UK would overhaul the welfare system across the UK if it were to enter government, according to treasury spokesman Robert Jenrick. Writing for The Telegraph, Jenrick described the current system as a “moral and economic catastrophe,” stating that their proposed reforms could generate more than £50bn in savings.
A significant portion of these savings, totaling £22bn, would come from reforms to the disability programme. These changes would see nearly three million claimants have their payments either withdrawn or modified. Jenrick emphasized that Reform UK will not pretend these plans are painless.
The announcement comes as the party prepares to publish its 50-page plan on Monday for what Jenrick described as the “most comprehensive redesign of the welfare system’s machinery in a generation.”
