Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. recently provided a candid look into the dietary habits of President Donald Trump during air travel. Known for his own strict nutritional regimen focused on grass-fed proteins and fermented items, Kennedy remarked that he has personally witnessed “boxes and boxes” of McDonald’s meals while aboard the presidential plane.
These observations were shared during a guest appearance on the “Net Positive” podcast, which premiered on Wednesday, August 12. During the conversation, Kennedy described the scene inside the aircraft, emphasizing the sheer volume of fast food present whenever the president is in transit.
When questioned by podcast host John Crist regarding whether he attempts to influence the president’s eating habits, Kennedy clarified his position. He stated that he avoids acting as a “scold” toward the commander-in-chief, acknowledging that the president consumes high-quality, nutritious meals during most of his time at the White House or his Mar-a-Lago residence.
Kennedy explained that the president’s reliance on national fast-food chains during travel stems from a specific concern regarding food safety. According to the HHS secretary, Trump prefers these standardized options because he harbors a fear of contracting food poisoning while on the road.
The secretary noted that when the president is at home, his diet shifts significantly toward fresh, locally sourced produce. Kennedy praised these home-based meals, suggesting that the president maintains a healthy standard for the majority of his routine.
This is not the first time Kennedy has publicly addressed the president’s relationship with processed food. Earlier this year, he expressed bewilderment regarding the president’s health given his frequent consumption of soda and fast-food items, famously stating he did not understand “how he’s alive.”
Kennedy’s personal commitment to his own health journey has also garnered significant attention. He has credited his specific diet of fermented foods and grass-fed meats for a recent transformation that resulted in a 20-pound weight loss over a 30-day period.
Beyond his personal habits, Kennedy is the primary figure behind the “Make America Healthy Again” (MAHA) movement, which serves as a cornerstone of the current administration’s health policy. Following his 2025 inauguration, President Trump established the MAHA Commission via executive order to address national health outcomes, specifically targeting reductions in chronic diseases among both children and adults.
While many medical professionals and health experts support the movement’s emphasis on increasing the intake of fresh fruits and vegetables, other aspects of the initiative have faced intense scrutiny. Critics within the scientific community have expressed concerns over MAHA’s proposals regarding vaccine policy and various claims linking diet to autism, leading to ongoing debates about the direction of federal health guidance.
Kennedy has credited that diet for helping him lose 20 pounds in 30 days.
