Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk has confirmed the arrest of a Russian citizen suspected of orchestrating a plot to kill a US citizen of Ukrainian origin in Warsaw. The suspect was taken into custody by Polish authorities on August 7, according to official statements released on Thursday.
While Tusk did not disclose the identity of the intended target, he noted that the individual was considered “inconvenient to the Putin regime.” The Prime Minister described the operation as a “very dangerous signal,” marking the first documented instance of an entity acting on behalf of Russia to target a US citizen within the borders of a NATO member state.
Tusk praised the swift intervention of Poland’s Internal Security Agency and local police, stating, “At the last minute, thanks to the action of the Internal Security Agency and the police, we managed to prevent this execution, this attack.” Tomasz Siemoniak, the Polish minister overseeing security services, added via social media that the arrest was the result of close cooperation with American authorities.
This incident occurs against a backdrop of heightened regional tensions following Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, which began on February 24, 2022. While Russian President Vladimir Putin has frequently blamed NATO for the conflict, citing the alliance’s eastward expansion, NATO maintains that its support for Ukraine is a matter of the country’s right to self-defense.
