White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt is set to vacate her position at the conclusion of August, transitioning into a new role as a senior outside adviser to President Trump. The president announced the departure on Truth Social this Wednesday, noting that Leavitt intends to dedicate more time to her young family. Leavitt, who is 28, made history as the youngest individual to hold the press secretary title when she assumed the role at age 27.
In his statement, Mr. Trump expressed full support for her decision, stating, “Our wonderful White House Press Secretary, and one of my most trusted aides, Karoline Leavitt, will be departing her role at the end of the month so she can spend more time with her beautiful young children and family, a decision I totally understand and respect!” He further praised her tenure, describing her as a “real leader” who has performed a “phenomenal job” since 2018, including her work during the 2024 re-election campaign. He added that she will remain an influential voice within the Republican Party as they approach the midterm elections.
Leavitt, who recently returned to the White House following the birth of her second child in May, shared her own perspective on the transition. “The truth is since returning to the White House after the birth of my daughter, I have felt in my heart that I cannot be the best mom my two young children deserve while devoting the constant time, energy, and attention required of the White House Press Secretary,” she explained. She described the choice as a “bittersweet decision” and confirmed that she will continue to serve as a top adviser to the president from the outside, maintaining her advocacy for the MAGA movement and the Republican Party.
While Leavitt has served as press secretary since the start of the president’s second term, the administration has not yet announced a successor or an interim replacement. Her departure arrives with less than three months remaining before the midterm elections. Leavitt expressed her gratitude to President Trump for the opportunity to serve in such a high-profile capacity during her time in the administration.
