Nick Reiner has been formally indicted for the stabbing deaths of his parents, Rob and Michele Reiner. The grand jury indictment, released by officials on Wednesday, August 12, charges the 32-year-old with two counts of murder. The filing includes special circumstance allegations of multiple murders and committing a crime by means of lying in wait. Reiner has entered a plea of not guilty to these charges.
Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan J. Hochman addressed the indictment in a formal statement, describing the incident as a “profound betrayal by someone who was loved and trusted by the very people he is accused of killing.” Prosecutors have also included an allegation that Reiner personally utilized a knife as a deadly weapon during the commission of the crimes.
The legal proceedings follow the discovery of the couple’s bodies at their Brentwood, California, residence on December 14. According to the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner, the 78-year-old director and his 70-year-old wife both succumbed to multiple sharp force injuries. Death certificates indicate that Rob Reiner died at 3:45 p.m., followed by Michele Reiner one minute later. Reiner was arrested that same evening and initially faced criminal charges on December 16.

Reiner claimed in these documents that he lacks the resources to pay for legal counsel or basic necessities while in custody. His former high-profile defense attorney, Alan Jackson, previously withdrew from the case due to circumstances beyond his control but noted in a declaration that his firm remains prepared to resume representation if the defendant gains access to the funds.
The court has scheduled a hearing for the trust fund matter later this month, while the murder case is slated for further proceedings in September.
