A second consecutive storm, named Storm Boelo, is expected to bring severe disruption to the UK through the weekend. The Met Office has issued amber wind warnings for parts of Scotland, Northern Ireland, and northern England, which are set to take effect from 21:00 BST on Saturday. These regions are bracing for intense conditions as the system tracks across the country.
Forecasters anticipate that strong winds and heavy showers will escalate throughout Saturday evening. Widespread gusts of 60 to 70mph are expected to hit Scotland, with the most severe conditions potentially reaching 80mph in exposed coastal areas. The amber warning for Scotland is scheduled to remain in effect for 24 hours, while the alert for Northern Ireland runs until 10:00 on Sunday. Before spreading eastwards overnight and through Sunday, the strongest winds will affect western Scotland first on Saturday evening.
The impact of these high winds includes a significant risk of travel disruption, power cuts, flying debris, and structural damage to buildings and trees. Try not to walk, or shelter, close to buildings and trees, if you do go out.
Authorities have warned that the danger to life from large waves is also a possibility.
The Met Office’s chief forecaster, Jason Kelly, urged the public to prepare for travel and power supply issues, advising residents to secure loose outdoor items and monitor local forecasts. Plan ahead if you are travelling and keep up to date with the latest forecast and warnings for your area, secure loose items outside.
Official guidance warns that being outside during these high-wind events could make individuals more vulnerable to injury. Residents are advised to stay indoors as much as possible and, if travel is necessary, to avoid walking or sheltering near trees and buildings.
These warnings arrive as the country recovers from Storm Austen, which caused significant power outages, particularly in south-west England. Although the National Grid has successfully restored power to over 124,000 properties since the onset of the previous storm, hundreds of households remained without electricity on Saturday evening.
Beyond the amber zones, additional weather alerts are active. Yellow rain warnings are in place for Wales, the West Midlands, and across the north-west, south-east, and south-west of England until 23:00 on Saturday. Furthermore, yellow wind warnings cover much of Scotland and northern England until 21:00 on Sunday, with Northern Ireland’s own yellow wind warning remaining active until midday on Sunday.
