Thousands of demonstrators filled streets across Spain on Saturday, marking a widespread push for housing reform. Approximately 50 marches were held in major urban centers, including Madrid, Barcelona, and Valencia, as citizens vented their frustration over soaring rental costs and the prevalence of property evictions. Major protest in Spain as millions struggle to find an affordable home.

The unrest follows a significant political setback for Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez’s leftist coalition government on Friday, when lawmakers rejected their emergency housing package. The proposed legislation had been drafted in response to intense public outrage sparked by the eviction of an 87-year-old woman last month, who was forced from her home after struggling to pay a sudden, steep rent increase.

Protesters are calling for comprehensive systemic changes, including the implementation of rent caps, a definitive end to evictions, and restrictions on investment firms—referred to by officials as “vulture funds”—from purchasing residential properties. In Valencia, a spokesperson for the local tenants’ union noted that “there is a lot of anger in the streets,” with reports confirming that physical clashes broke out between some demonstrators and law enforcement officers in the city.

The legislative defeat has intensified questions surrounding the future of the current administration. Because the governing coalition, consisting of the Socialist Party and the Sumar alliance, lacks a formal parliamentary majority, the failure of this bill has fueled speculation regarding the possibility of an early general election, which was otherwise not expected until the summer of next year.
