President Emmanuel Macron has formally classified a recent shooting spree in a Parisian suburb as a “racist terrorist attack.” The incident, which resulted in one fatality and five injuries, was described by the president as a “turning point in the life of our Republic and our nation,” marking an unprecedented instance of random, racially motivated violence in the region.
The violent episode unfolded over approximately 15 minutes as an assailant drove a grey Renault Clio through several neighborhoods.
The gunman began his assault in Trappes, south-west of Paris, before moving to the nearby town of La Verrière. And then in nearby La Verrière – appearing to target people of migrant origin, the attack unfolded over some 15 minutes with the attacker opening fire from his car – first in Trappes to the south-west of Paris.
According to the Mayor of Trappes, Ali Rabeh, the perpetrator appeared to target individuals based on their skin color or religious identity, firing randomly at a petrol station, a medical center, and a playground with the intent to cause maximum carnage. According to rabeh, He had “fired randomly” with the seeming intent of causing “as many casualties as possible… he wanted to cause carnage”, he said.
Three victims, including a 12-year-old girl, remain in serious condition. The young girl reportedly suffered eight gunshot wounds and required surgery. Her mother, speaking to the broadcaster RTL, expressed disbelief that such violence could be directed at a child and noted that her daughter was wearing a headscarf, questioning whether this was a motivating factor for the attacker. How could anyone do this to a child?” she asked. To make her life in France,” she added, she has the right to live in France.
The suspect, identified in local media as a 39-year-old man named Kevin T, was apprehended by authorities on the N10 road in La Verrière. While he was known to local police, he did not appear on security intelligence watchlists. The National Anti-Terrorist Prosecutor’s Office (PNAT) confirmed that a family member of the suspect has also been taken into custody for further investigation.
Investigators report that the suspect utilized an older-model semi-automatic weapon, which French media outlets have described as dating back to World War Two. PNAT is currently treating the case as a “murder in connection with a terrorist enterprise,” with their probe covering potential charges of “conspiracy with a terrorist group for the purpose of preparing crimes against persons” and possession of a Category A military-grade weapon.
During a visit to the site of the attack in Trappes, President Macron urged the public to remain steadfast against what he termed “ideologies taking root” in society.
He emphasized the gravity of the situation, noting that the victims were targeted specifically for their background. As emergency services conclude their presence at the scene, the investigation continues into the suspect’s history, which includes four previous convictions that have been automatically expunged.
