Thomas Markle, the father of Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, has appeared in a Florida court to face federal charges related to the possession of child sexual abuse material. The 82-year-old was arrested following an FBI operation that targeted two storage units in the Los Angeles area, which Markle had reportedly rented for nearly two decades. During a 30-minute court hearing on Friday, federal prosecutor Courtenay Derry outlined the charges against Markle. He arrived in court in a wheelchair, escorted by US Marshals, and was dressed in black trousers and a black t-shirt. The court has ordered that he remain under home detention at his current assisted living facility in Florida, subject to electronic monitoring. No plea was entered during the initial appearance, and officials stated that a future arraignment in California will be scheduled. Thomas Markle pictured in 2018 in San Diego, California. The investigation stems from the search of storage units registered to Markle since 2008, with final payments recorded as recently as October.
FBI agents reportedly recovered approximately 78 items, including books, film negatives, and slides alleged to contain illegal material.
FBI Director Kash Patel stated that authorities moved quickly, alleging that Markle targeted innocent children, adding that the bureau would use every resource to ensure there is no safe haven for such offenders. The US Department of Justice (DoJ) said, he is charged with one count of possessing indecent images of children. He added that the FBI would “use every single resource at our disposal to protect innocent kids â any predator who targets children will have zero safe haven in this country or anywhere they try to hide”.
Investigators claim that witnesses positively identified Markle in two of the images, which appear to show a person in their 30s or 40s, suggesting the alleged material dates back several decades.
Markle has previously dismissed allegations regarding the possession of such material as “sick lies.” His legal situation follows recent actions in the Philippines, where local police obtained a warrant to examine devices removed from his former residence. Thomas Markle Jr. reportedly handed over four boxes of equipment, including hard drives, computers, and tapes, to authorities. Markle Sr. had lived in Cebu, Philippines, following a series of strokes last year, before moving to a rehabilitation center in the United States. He was then reportedly living in a Florida rehabilitation centre learning to walk again after having his leg amputated.
The developments have also brought scrutiny to the London Metropolitan Police. In October, the force confirmed it had received a letter in 2019 detailing several allegations concerning Markle. While the information was shared with the office of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, the Met did not pass it to other law enforcement agencies at the time. The force has since referred itself to the Independent Office for Police Conduct regarding its handling of that correspondence.
Meghan has been estranged from her father since 2018 and is understood to have fully ceased contact with him last year. Following the emergence of the allegations in October, the Duchess released a statement expressing deep distress and emphasizing her concern for any children who may have been harmed. Neither the Duke nor the Duchess of Sussex has provided further comment on the recent arrest. The Duchess of Sussex said: “I am deeply distressed at the news that has come to light in the last 24 hours, and my thoughts are with an, in a statement released in October after the allegations against Markle Sr emerged.
