A mid-flight altercation on a Flydubai jet has triggered urgent security questions and an official investigation after a co-pilot allegedly attacked the captain during a flight bound for Tel Aviv. The incident occurred on flight FZ1073, which experienced a sudden drop in altitude from 33,000 feet to 17,000 feet within a single minute, approximately two and a half hours after departing from Dubai. What happened on board Flydubai FZ1073. Dropping from 33,000 feet (10,000 metres) to 17,000 feet (5,000 metres) within a minute, according to Israeli officials, the captain and his co-pilot were allegedly engaged in fighting as the aircraft swiftly lost altitude.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed that the captain, Smit Machchhar, was stabbed during the struggle. Despite his injuries, Machchhar managed to open the cockpit door, enabling crew and passengers to intervene and neutralize the alleged assailant. Netanyahu hailed the Indian-born captain as a true hero, crediting him with preventing a catastrophic midair disaster. The flight subsequently made a safe emergency landing in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia, an hour after the distress signal was sent at 8:44 local time. According to netanyahu, One of the pilots had stabbed the other and then tried to crash the plane.
Both pilots remain hospitalized in Saudi Arabia, where the attacker has been taken into custody. While the attacker’s identity and citizenship have not been officially disclosed, investigators are working to determine if the incident was linked to terrorism or prior planning. Netanyahu stated that while some officials have labeled the event a jihadist attack, he believes it is too early to determine the underlying motives or if there was any external involvement, including from Iran. He noted that he anticipates the suspect will eventually be transferred to the Emirates for legal proceedings. According to the investigation team would “collect information and evidence to determine the truth of the incident, its circumstances, details, and motives, and to verify the extent of its connection to any terrorist activity or purpose, or the existence of prior planning or direction for it”, the UAE’s Attorney General Hamad Saif al-Shamsi, On Thursday. Very little verified information has come through so far.
The incident has intensified scrutiny on pilot certification and background vetting. Flydubai operates under the oversight of the United Arab Emirates’ General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA). The European Union Aviation Safety Agency confirmed that the GCAA holds responsibility for ensuring that the airline adheres to stringent requirements regarding flight crews and safety protocols. These standards include mandatory physical and mental health screenings, including Class 1 medical certifications, though experts caution that such evaluations are merely snapshots that may not account for latent behavioral shifts.
Saj Ahmad, chief analyst at StrategicAero Research, observed that while the industry conducts thorough security and financial background checks, these measures cannot always predict how an individual might react to perceived personal injustices or workplace tensions. In response to the breach, the Israeli Ministry of Transport is reportedly planning to increase security checks for all pilots arriving in the country, aiming to verify the credentials and backgrounds of aircrews more rigorously.
Capt. Machchhar, a veteran pilot with nearly 9,750 logged flight hours, had been with Flydubai for four years following an eleven-year tenure at the Indian airline SpiceJet. Before his aviation career, he briefly pursued engineering and management studies in Mumbai. His colleagues and family have described a dedicated professional, and his own comments in a 2025 podcast emphasized a focus on completing job requirements with strict discipline.
Aviation history provides context for the severity of such cockpit incidents, with authorities reviewing past events such as the 1987 Pacific Southwest Airlines crash, the 1994 FedEx Flight 705 attack, and the deliberate 2015 Germanwings Flight 9525 crash, all of which underscore the extreme risks posed by pilot incapacitation or hostile behavior. As the current investigation proceeds, the UAE and Saudi authorities have urged the public to avoid speculation until official evidence is reviewed.
