Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce are currently embroiled in a trademark infringement lawsuit brought by 1587 Sneakers, which alleges the NFL stars are attempting to minimize their involvement in the Kansas City steakhouse, 1587 Prime. While counsel for the two athletes filed a request on July 3 to dismiss all claims with prejudice, the sneaker company pushed back in an August 4 court filing.
In their opposition to the dismissal, 1587 Sneakers argued that Mahomes and Kelce are attempting to rebrand themselves as mere celebrity faces for the business. The company contends that the duo actually served as the primary driving force behind the brand, noting that the name “1587” was specifically derived from the players’ respective jersey numbers, 15 and 87. The restaurant, which opened on September 17, 2025, identifies both athletes as co-founders alongside their partner, Noble 33.
The legal dispute centers on conflicting trademark claims. 1587 Sneakers asserts that it began selling products under its name on April 13, 2023, and argues this establishes priority, despite not filing for a formal trademark with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office until October 2025. That application, which covers the clothing category, remains under review. In contrast, the “1587 Prime” trademark was filed in December 2023 and is registered under the bar and restaurant category.
Attorneys for Mahomes and Kelce have maintained that the pair lacks control over the restaurant’s operations and holds no specific ties to New York, the jurisdiction where the lawsuit was initiated. The plaintiffs, however, insist that the athletes were the “moving forces” behind the enterprise and are integral to its market identity.
The ongoing litigation seeks to force the restaurant to cease using the “1587” name and stop the sale of any associated merchandise. Additionally, 1587 Sneakers is pursuing punitive damages as part of its claim. The case, which involves reporting contributions from Nick Brinkerhoff, remains active in the court system.
According to court records obtained by Sports, counsel representing Mahomes and Kelce requested to dismiss all claims asserted against the duo with prejudice on July 3.
