Counter-terror investigators have arrested five men on suspicion of preparing a terrorist act and explosive-related offences. The arrests followed reports of three suspicious vehicles traveling toward RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire at approximately 00:45 BST on Sunday. Following the alert, a major incident was declared, triggering a significant emergency service mobilization, including a hazardous area response team.
A 400-meter cordon remains in place around the site, which serves as a base for the United States Air Force. Army explosive ordnance disposal personnel have been examining the vehicles in a wooded area, where footage depicted a remote-controlled robot approaching stationary white vans. While police have not confirmed the specific use of the device, they stated that the situation is believed to be contained.
Dozens of residents from the nearby village of Whelford were evacuated as a precaution. Authorities have informed those affected that they will not be permitted to return to their homes overnight. Law enforcement officers maintained a presence at the scene throughout the day to continue the investigation.
