Earl Spencer has stated that the treatment of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex by the press bears striking similarities to the scrutiny endured by his late sister, Diana, Princess of Wales. He characterized the ongoing media coverage of Prince Harry and Meghan as a “cancerous influence” within their lives, emphasizing that society should reflect on the lessons from Diana’s experience.
The couple, who recently revisited the UK from their home in California six years after departing from royal duties, have frequently spoken out against press practices. Spencer’s comments follow recent reports regarding a 1997 telephone conversation he had with King Charles shortly after Diana’s death. During that exchange, the Earl alleges the King remarked that public memory of the Princess would fade “soon enough,” a claim Spencer maintains is the truth. The report also notes that it comes after reported on Friday how Earl Spencer says he was “telling the truth” when he claimed King Charles said people would forget Diana “soon enough” in a phone call in the days after her death.
