European football nations may still move to boycott major tournaments, including the World Cup, following Uefa’s declaration that Fifa’s recent defense of president Gianni Infantino “changes nothing.” The statement from the European governing body arrived after Infantino offered an apology during a Fifa executive meeting held in Morocco on Wednesday.
Uefa emphasized that its specific requirements for reconciliation have not been satisfied, even though the controversial plan to sell stakes in the World Cup to private investors has been abandoned. The organization stated, “First, the proposals to sell off the major competitions had to be withdrawn and secondly, assurances have to be made that such attempts to disfigure the game in this way will never be made again. These conditions have not been met.”
The English FA has formally withdrawn its support for Infantino in response to the proposal. Uefa previously expressed a total loss of confidence in the president, labeling the Fifa Forward Enterprise (FFE) initiative a “shabby, back room, opaque deal.”
